Protecting by sharing
The land sets the terms here. Four hundred acres of forest, water and old stone, kept off the grid and kept quiet, watched over by one ranger who never left. In August 2025 the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada certified the sky above it, the country’s newest dark sky preserve and the closest to Ottawa. We open it to people who mean to come back rather than to everyone who asks. Since 2015 that has been the whole of it: protect by sharing.
Our storyThree places to wake up
Each one off-grid, out of sight of the others, and open to Earth members.
Ancient Ruins
Colossal stone structures, and thousands of clusters across the northeast. Be part of uncovering who built them, and why.
Dark Sky Preserve
A place of stillness and awe, where ancient stones meet modern astronomy and silence returns to the night.
Ranger Steve
In August 2015, Steve answered a calling to the land and never left. Guided by Inook, his wolf-like Canadian Eskimo dog, he spent a year learning every peak, river, and wetland by heart, until he could roam all 400 acres with no map and no fear.

The land sits in La Pêche, north past Gatineau Park: far enough that the city’s glow drops below the treeline, close enough to leave after work and be under the stars the same night.

Wonderful place. Beautiful views in all directions from the cabin. Beavers and blue herons in the ponds. A small beaver dam waterfall and hammock near the cabin. Big skylight above the upstairs bed to enjoy the stars and dark sky preserve.
Steve has a magical spot here. Enjoy wandering the forest, r&r by the fire and views of the wildlife in the valley. A cabin where you can hear the wolves sing and watch the eagles fly. What more could you ask for!?
We had such a fantastic stay at this cosy off-grid cabin. The space was warm and inviting, with an amazing view that made every sunrise and sunset feel special. At night, the sky was filled with stars that truly felt magical.
We absolutely loved everything about this perfect winter cabin getaway! The cabin was surrounded by a beautiful forest and beaver pond with well maintained winter trails for us to explore by snowshoe!
I feel so lucky to have had 2 wonderful nights in Dogstar. The photos really don’t do it justice. Millions of trees as far as the eye can see, sparkly plush snow and a cozy woodstove.
I’ve been in summer and in winter months and the magic is there every time. Such a special place.
Wonderful host, incredible camp, and an archeological mystery en plus!!
Cozy cabin, lovely and isolated setting, and lots of stars! A perfect getaway from the city and the hectic pace of life.
